It takes several weeks for the gums to heal, during which time subtle changes in the contours of your mouth will take place. There is usually a gap of about 4 to 6 months between extractions, and when we are able to place a permanent denture. To bridge this gap, an immediate denture is designed and created in advance. You can begin wearing it as soon as your teeth are extracted. Once healing is complete, the immediate denture will be replaced with a permanent denture.

What To Expect

The process begins with a free consultation. If you opt for immediate dentures, we will take impressions, and other diagnostics prior to extraction. This data is used to create an immediate denture, so it is ready when you are. The immediate denture is placed immediately after the extraction of your natural teeth.

With immediate dentures you don’t have to be without teeth while your gums are healing. However, during the first six months, bone and gums will shrink over time significantly. Therefore we will temporarily re-fit the immediate denture with a healing liner to prevent any discomfort caused by a loose denture. Followed by the healing period (4 to 6 month post extraction), you have an option to either fabricate a new permanent denture or to reline and refit the immediate denture.
